Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is typically done for a woman who has lost a breast due to cancer or other condition. The plastic surgeon constructs a new breast from the patients’ own tissue or with a breast implant resulting in a relatively natural-looking breast. The use of a breast implant will require the use of tissue expanders to stretch healthy skin enough to create the new breast.

Breast reconstruction can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or be delayed until the time the woman is ready to proceed. The decision to have breast reconstruction is a very personal decision for a woman that her plastic surgeon can assist with by discussing options, risks and benefits.

It is important to know that a reconstructed breast will probably not have exactly the same look or sensation as the original breast and incision lines will be present. Our plastic surgeons will carefully go over options, any course of treatment, risks and likely outcomes.

We are here to help you make the decision regarding breast reconstruction. We will work closely with your general surgeon and cancer physician to ensure you get the care you need.
